Choose your problem statement:
- Identification & Quantification of Supply Chain Risk
Develop, test, and standardise a definition of supply chain risk and resilience. The definition should lead to a quantifiable metric to measure SC risk and resilience, leading to unambiguous and consistent decision-making. A supply chain risk model developed using a consistent definition can be used for stress testing. - HAZOP Based Fault Diagnosis and Root Cause Analysis in industrial systems
In plant-wide anomaly monitoring systems, after identifying faults and key contributing variables, it’s crucial to predict affected variables and trace the problem's origin. This prognosis and root cause analysis (RCA) is challenging in unsupervised systems with limited fault data. - Improving data quality using data integration across tools and enabling workflows for Assets
Data quality is a foundational and major requirement to enable integration across data source systems and end-to-end workflows resulting to automation, simplification and enhanced value from data. Currently, data is “siloed” across lifecycle resulting in lack of integration across systems.

{Video opens to 2 people sitting in a press conference with a black backdrop that is branded with the Web Summit logo in white. The person on the right is Dan Jeavons, VP Digital Innovation Shell and the person on the left is Dr. Jack Lau, President of Qatar Science & Technology Park. The video stays in this frame for the entire duration.}
00:00 – 01:04 {Dan Jeavons, VP Digital Innovation Shell}
Well, good afternoon, everybody. It's brilliant to be with you. It's great to be launching this new competition.
We're launching today the Shell.ai Futures Pitch, Qatar edition. It's the first time we're doing it in Qatar. This is the third edition in total.
And really, this is our attempt to reach out to the broader startup community and engage them on the topics of AI and energy transition. In terms of the competition itself, what we've done is we've curated a set of problem statements, which we launched today. And we're inviting startups from across the globe to come and participate in this with a view to engaging here in Qatar.
The key point around this competition is that there are cash prizes for the winners. But also, most importantly, there's an opportunity for the winners to have a paid proof of concept with Shell, and also to become a member of the Qatar Science and Technology Park. And we see this as a key contribution to the national mission.
I'll ask Jack to say a few words and build on what I've said. All right. Good afternoon, guys.
01:11 – 02:46 {Dr. Jack Lau, President of Qatar Science & Technology Park}
I was inside preparing for the press conference, and I was kidding with Dan. I said, actually, I wish I were your age, because I'd rather be sitting down there than sitting up here to announce the competition. But here I am.
This is my job. This is the first time we work with Shell. Qatar Science and Technology Park is extremely proud and pleased to launch this first and ever, the best probably, the pitch event.
Here's a chance for able, probably young, super excited, enthusiastic mind to participate in a competition that's not only technologically fun, AI, but also in energy sector, helping our planet. This is an impactful project that QSTP is going to support to its fullest extent, enabling the best minds to create a solution for the betterment of humanity. I say with that, because it's not just any science competition.
It's a competition that will hopefully shake and make our world better. Artificial intelligence is hard. But I tell you, applying them with unique data set and guidance from Shell on a practical problem, wow, that's exciting.
So yes, I look forward to the winners and participants to come to QSTP. I hope that you make a lot of noise at QSTP. I'll take good care of you when you come.
02:47 – 03:39 {Dan Jeavons, VP Digital Innovation Shell}
Thanks so much, Jack. And we'll play a short video and then open for questions.
[Shell.ai Futures Pitch Qatar Teaser plays]
03:40 – 03:55 {Emil Protalinski, Editor at EPro Strategies and Techmeme}
If there are any questions at this time, please raise your hand.
I'll pass the mic to you. I'll ask you to state your name and affiliation, followed by your question. So are there any questions? You can ask ChatGPT to see if you have any questions.
That's allowed.
04:02 – 04:11 {Sofi Rafa, Digital Marketing AI Consultant and Editor, Sophisticated}
Hi, everyone. This is Sofi Rafa, digital marketing AI consultant and editor of Sophisticated.
The question is, what are the criterias to participate?
04:12 – 04:38 {Dan Jeavons, VP Digital Innovation Shell}
Well, it's open globally. Ultimately, we're looking to attract all startups from across the world to come here and be part of this. The key thing is that we want startups to focus on the problem statements we've identified and to work with us through a curated process to ultimately be part of the final competition and have a chance of winning.
But really, we've tried to make it as open as we possibly can. Jack, do you want to add anything to that?
04:39 – 05:21 {Dr. Jack Lau, President of Qatar Science & Technology Park}
Of course, they are at a bonus for participating in this competition. Because in AI, what is the hardest thing? The hardest thing is not programming.
The hardest thing is the problem statement. The hardest thing is the data set. And here, together with Shell, you have very, very impactful problem statements and also extremely useful data set.
Not to say the least, guidance from Shell and QSTP to help participants to navigate through all this. So as Dan said, this is for everybody who is interested in making an impact in the world.
05:21 – 05:23 {Dan Jeavons, VP Digital Innovation Shell}
That's that, Jack.
05:23 – 05:30 {Thierry Lesales, Environmental Journalist, Oryx FM radio}
Yes, good afternoon. Thierry Lausalle from Oryx FM. What is the timeline of the competition?
05:35 – 05:59 {Dan Jeavons, VP Digital Innovation Shell}
So the timeline, it's going to take place over the next few months.
The aim is to have a final pitching session around June for the winners. And then ultimately, we also hope that we'll be able to then run the paid proof of concepts before our September conference, where we hope that we'll be able to showcase some results. So the aim is to try to accelerate the time frame over the next few months and to make sure we actually show progress by September.
06:03 – 06:19 {Emil Protalinski, Editor at EPro Strategies and Techmeme}
Any other questions? Going once, twice? OK, I think that might conclude today's press conference. And I will thank the panelists for their time and you for your attendance. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much, everybody.
