A Master Class in HSSE Leadership for Project Managers to teach leadership, with a focus on the cause and prevention of major disasters.’

Doha, 1 March 2016: TAFAWOQ, the world-class Project Management Centre of Excellence, hosted a ‘Master Class in HSSE Leadership for Project Managers’ as part of its commitment to further develop the competences of the project management professionals in Qatar.
The Master Class, held in Doha on 10th and 11th February 2016, targeted senior project managers and directors, HSSE managers, asset managers, and operations managers who are involved in projects and asset management in the oil and gas industry.
The event offered participants the opportunity to network with senior Shell executives, who shared their insights on how to acquire the required leadership and professional skills to become a successful project manager. Participants discussed past major disasters, lessons learned, and how to better manage similar scenarios and how to prevent them should they arise in the future. More importantly, they focused on workers’ welfare and how fostering a culture of care and wellbeing for workers creates a happy workforce that is both more productive and works more safely. In addition, global case studies of best-in-class projects were presented, including the successful implementation of HSSE during the Pearl GTL Project in Ras Laffan.
Bader Al-Jaidah, Director of TAFAWOQ said: “TAFAWOQ aims to provide an environment that will support and foster development for project management professionals. We are proud to offer this Master Class, which will assist in the progression of current industry innovations and ultimately contribute to our professional advancement, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.”
“TAFAWOQ’s numerous programmes, master classes and series of workshops aim to address any challenges these leaders may have, and provide strategic, sustainable solutions,” added Jaidah.
Ian Jewitt, HSSE Delivery Manager Integrated Gas at Shell said: “I am honoured to have been invited to contribute to TAFAWOQ’s HSSE Leadership Master Class, which provided a unique platform for knowledge-sharing between the project management professionals and their peers. The facilitation of practical, every day solutions and techniques to handle project assets and HSSE challenges is imperative to our industry, and is something we should all focus on. This event will enable project managers to work towards achieving their HSSE leadership goals, and will ultimately create a more unified culture across projects and organisations in Qatar.”
Hamdan Easa Al-Kubaisi, Head of Construction &Interface Services at the Engineering & Ventures Division, Qatargas, acknowledged that the fundamental leadership skills he acquired during the Master Class will assist in his job on a daily basis. “Understanding major disaster risks and how to avoid them is an imperative part of my role, as is the planning and implementation of HSSE standards,” he said. “I was particularly interested in the case studies discussions. I believe that learning from those who have already experienced these scenarios will increase my expertise in this area, and I would like to thank TAFAWOQ for providing me with the opportunity to learn new skills that will benefit me, my colleagues and our organisations.”
TAFAWOQ, a partnership between QatarEnergy, Qatar Shell, and Hamad Bin Khalifa University, offers world-class training for project professionals through unique programmes to further develop the competencies of the thriving project management community in Qatar.
