road safety exhibition in Qatar

Road Safety

‘Darb al Salama’ is a road safety initiative launched in 2014 by the Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Program (RLIC-COP), in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, the Traffic Department, and the Police Social Administration, is aimed at educating young people about the importance of safe driving.

Darb Al Salama’ initiative, supports the Human pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030 by helping to protect Qatar’s most valuable resource – its people – through road safety awareness.

Run across cities in Qatar’s Northern Communities including Al Shamal, Al Thakhira, Al Khor, Simaisma, and Al Kaaban, ‘Darb Al Salama’ is a year-long initiative targeted at drivers, passengers and pedestrians aged 14 to 21. The initiative uses a mix of experiential and computer-based education software to help change driving and road safety behaviours and attitudes to support the reduction of fatal road accidents and serious injuries caused by reckless driving.

‘Darb Al Salama’ comprises interactive activities that test users’ hazard anticipation skills, defensive driving techniques, and awareness of speed. It also covers the topics of pedestrian safety, seatbelts and child seats. The initiative also includes life-sized simulators that enable young drivers to experience the impact of a car rollover and low-speed crashes, highlighting the importance of buckling up.

Some of the technology used as part of the initiative includes the ‘Rakkiz Tislam’ programme, which debuted in Middle East this year. ‘Rakkiz Tislam’, which means ‘focus and be safe’ in Arabic, is a realistic driver learning software module based on a highly successful young driver scheme in the UK. It is designed to help young drivers identify and respond to potentially unsafe traffic situations to ultimately improve their road safety habits.

‘Rakkiz Tislam’ has been designed and tailored to Qatar’s traffic environment by driver education software company ‘a2om’, and includes real traffic incidences filmed on Qatar’s roads.

To date, more than 12,000 students, and their parents, from youth centres and schools across Qatar have participated in the ‘Darb Al Salama’ initiative.   The ‘Darb Al Salama’ initiative was also showcased for the first time at the 31st GCC Traffic Week in Doha this year, with more than 9,000 visitors participated in the programme’s activities.

The ‘Darb Al Salama’ outreach campaign is brought to Qatar by RLIC- COP, which is headed by QatarEnergy, and in partnership with RasGas, Dolphin Energy Limited, Pearl GTL (the world’s largest gas to liquids plant delivered by QatarEnergy and Qatar Shell), Oryx GTL, Qatargas, and AlKhaleej Gas. RLIC-COP supports many long-term sustainable initiatives in the areas of education, culture, health, environment, security and safety. It also supports local programmes in collaboration with cultural institutes, youth centres, NGOs, and women associations in the northern communities.
