The workshop highlighted the importance of ensuring safety in designing, building, operating and maintaining a top quartile research work.
The workshop was presented by Klaas Karregat of Shell Global Solutions, an expert with 35 years of experience in the field of project management and engineering, auditing, inspection and special media systems in the laboratories. The workshop is designed to create inherent safety awareness when working in laboratories and to stress that, regardless of the research objective or required equipments, safety must be considered during from the very initial stages.
Shell’s Executive Vice President Andy Brown said: “Whether it’s at a large scale project or in a laboratory, safety is always our top priority at Shell. Just recently we inaugurated Pearl GTL, the world’s largest gas-to-liquids plant, which broke safety records in the industry by reaching 77 million man-hours worked without a single injury leading to lost work time. We hope to share this culture of safety that we bring, and through it contribute to the human development pillar in the Qatar National Vision 2030.”
QSRTC General Manager Youssif Saleh added: “Safety is one of the most crucial elements for the success of any research and development facility. Regardless of the type of research activities and required equipment, safety should be thought of during the design phase, implemented in the operation stage and practiced during the maintenance phase. We are pleased to organize specialized workshops covering safety and research and development topics at our research center, and hope that attendees benefit from the shared knowledge and experience.”
Shell is committed to a substantial expenditure of up to $100 million over a 10-year period on a world-class technology innovation and development programme at the science park. Also Shell filed the first patent application for an invention by any company there.
